What happens if the investigation doesn’t produce any results? Do I still have to pay for the service?

Answer from

Peter Hoffman, B.Sc.

Surveillance Specialist

Thank you for your question. This is one of the most common concerns clients have, and it’s important to clarify how investigative billing works.

Why Payment Is Required

In our agency, fees are based on the time spent in the field, the resources deployed, and associated operational expenses—not on the outcome. Here’s why:

  • Real Work Performed
Investigations involve actual work by trained professionals, including surveillance, data collection, and reporting. These activities require significant time, planning, and expertise, regardless of whether the ultimate goal is achieved.

  • Operational Costs
Costs include vehicle usage, fuel, specialized equipment (e.g., cameras, GPS trackers), and communication systems. These are real, measurable expenses incurred during the investigation.

  • Database Access and Records Searches
Many cases require access to professional databases and official records, which involve paid entries or subscriptions. We cannot influence whether the person you provided exists in those records, especially if the information (name, age, date of birth) is incomplete or inaccurate.

What If Nothing Is Found?

Even in cases where we cannot confirm the suspected activity or locate the subject, the fact that nothing was detected is itself a finding. For example:

  • If surveillance confirms the subject is not engaging in suspicious behavior during the observation period, that conclusion has value,

  • If a database check reveals no record matches, this information can help rule out certain scenarios.

Success Rate

We are proud to maintain a 95% success rate in achieving client objectives. However, results can be affected by factors beyond our control, such as:

  • The quality and quantity of information provided by the client,

  • Unrealistic goals or expectations,

  • Legal limitations on certain types of surveillance or data access.

Risk Disclosure and Client Communication

Before any investigation begins, we:

  • Conduct an initial consultation to clarify your objectives and expectations,

  • Explain the potential challenges, limitations, and legal constraints,

  • Provide a transparent cost estimate and risk assessment.

This ensures that you are fully informed before authorizing the investigation.

Summary

  • Yes, payment is required for the work and resources expended, even if the outcome does not match expectations,

  • Your benefit: You receive a professional report documenting all actions taken and findings (including negative results), which can still have strategic or legal value.

Contact us for a consultation to discuss your case and understand the realistic options available.
